The majority of the businesses were forced to work from home in the past year. Fewer than 45% are likely to return to full-time working from the office in 2021, with the large part deciding to split their time between the two places. In that case, the hybrid work model is here to stay and will undoubtedly be the future of work.

Hybrid work combines the advantages of both remote and office employment. This approach will benefit employees in the form of flexibility and work-life balance.

On the other hand, businesses will gain from the ability to attract and retain top talent. However, without an awareness of the obstacles and challenges associated with a hybrid model, the benefits may never be fully utilized.

Organizations that do not address the issues associated with hybrid working are likely to lose top talent to competitors who have taken strong measures to embrace these challenges and eradicate the risks. To ensure the best of both worlds, the organizations must address these five hybrid work challenges –

  1. Address & Eliminate Unconscious Bias
  2. Fostering a Culture of Trust & Acceptance
  3. Seamless and Effective Collaboration
  4. Build Team Relationships
  5. Employee Wellbeing

1. Address & Eliminate Unconscious Bias

According to MIT research, “remote workers may end up getting lower performance evaluations, smaller raises and fewer promotions than their colleagues in the office” simply because they are not present in the room.

Moreover, people working from the office are thought to be more devoted and persevering, even though the people working from home put in the same efforts and time.

The only way to eliminate this unconscious bias is to provide the tools that ensure equality between in-person and remote performance management. Also, leaders must encourage remote employees for video meetings and ensure effective task distribution among the teams.

2. Fostering a Culture of Trust & Acceptance

The cornerstone for constructive interactions and equity is a trust-based culture. Employees must be confident in their ability to strike a balance between their home and the corporate office. Similarly, managers must be assertive in their ability to support all their teams, irrespective of their location.

Both employees and leaders must trust and support each other to build an inclusive culture and make a hybrid work model successful.

3. Seamless & Effective Collaboration

There will undoubtedly be discrepancies and a lack of information if independently working individuals are not in tandem with those in the office.

Team leaders must schedule virtual meetings for entire teams and also provide opportunities for everyone to get together in person. Such events will allow everyone to collaborate well and be on the same page.

4. Build Team Relationships

Building trust and healthy connections can be as simple as setting shared goals and accomplishing meaningful things together. Regular check-ins and informal catch-ups are critical to keeping staff connected and motivated while working in a hybrid workplace.

5. Employee Wellbeing

Mental health conversations have become a priority since the pandemic hit the world, and working from home became a new normal. Organizations that want to implement a hybrid work paradigm must prioritize their employees’ mental and physical health.

Make sure to support and provide flexibility which in turn would result in higher productivity and employee performance.
